COLLEGE OF CANYONS : Trustees Approve 4-Day Workweek During Summer

Employees of the College of the Canyons will be allowed to have a four-day workweek during the summer, the Santa Clarita Community College District Board of Trustees has decided.
“We did this last year, trying to cut down on the cost of air-conditioning and utilities,” said James Walker, assistant superintendent-vice president of the college. “Since there are no summer school classes on Friday, we decided to close down.”
Classified employees could work four consecutive 10-hour days for a 40-hour week, work fewer hours and receive less pay or use vacation time to make up the difference.
Among the benefits of the four-day workweek would be savings to the college of between $6,000 and $8,000 because it would allow buildings to be shut down. The reduced number of vehicle trips generated by employees would also allow the college to meet Air Quality Management District commuting guidelines.
The change will be placed as an amendment into the California School Employee Assn. contract for the period June 4 through July 27.
