UCLA junior catcher Paul Ellis and Arizona State sophomore outfielder Mike Kelly were named the Pacific 10 Conference co-players of the year. Ellis batted .355 and was among the nation’s leaders with 28 home runs and 75 runs batted in.

All-conference first-team selections from UCLA included sophomore first baseman Chris Pritchett and sophomore outfielder Joel Wolfe. Honorable mention went to UCLA junior pitcher David Zancanaro and teammate Mike Hankins, a senior shortstop.

Pepperdine senior Britt Craven was named the West Coast Conference pitcher of the year for the second consecutive time. He had a 10-2 record with an earned-run average of 3.2.

First-team all-conference selections from Pepperdine were freshman first baseman Dan Melendez, senior third baseman Jim Doyle, senior shortstop Chris Martin and Craven. Waves who received honorable mention were freshman second baseman Steve Rodriguez, junior outfielder Jalal Leach and freshman pitcher Steve Duda.

New recruits for the UCLA men’s track and field team include javelin thrower Steve Barnett, a transfer from Glendale College, sprinter Tony Miller, a transfer from East Los Angeles College, and the following high school seniors: weight-specialist John Godina of Cheyenne, Wyo.; weight-thrower Greg Hodel of Don Lugo High in Chino, javelin thrower Greg Johnson of Menlo High in Atherton and sprinter Michael Williams of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Faye Greens won the Penmar Women’s Golf Club championship for the ninth time, shooting 167 for 36 holes to defeat defending champion Helen Reagin by a stroke. Others winners were: Nikki Trautvetter, low net, first flight; Ruth Mann, low gross, second flight; Stephanie Hawley, low net, second flight; Evelyn Shulem, low gross, third flight; Edith Taggart, low net, third flight; Marcie Nulty, low gross, fourth flight, and Rose Kramer, low net, fourth flight.

Jay Pittman shot a 36 for nine holes to win the Penmar Men’s Golf Club’s May tournament. Other flight winners and their gross scores were: Ray Fitzpatrick, B, 35; Ed Rice, C, 37; French Taylor, D, 41, and Doug Hall, temporary handicaps, 38.
