Demonstrators Protest Charges in May Day Event
About a dozen youthful demonstrators staged a noisy protest outside the downtown Los Angeles offices of Dist. Atty. Ira Reiner on Thursday, demanding that charges be dropped against associates arrested during a May Day demonstration and calling for an end to “American Imperialism.”
There were no arrests Thursday.
The demonstrators, who said they represented the Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade and La Resistancia, an immigrants’ rights group, wanted to talk with Reiner, but he was out of town, according to a spokesman for the district attorney’s office.
After leaving Reiner’s offices in the Criminal Courts building, the protesters headed to the fifth floor, where Francisco Fiallos, 21, had been arraigned Wednesday on charges of assault with a firearm on a police officer and battery on a police officer.
Fiallos was one of about 15 demonstrators arrested May 1 during a clash with Los Angeles police. Fiallos was the only one charged with a felony.
