Commercial Area Parking Changes OKd

The Palos Verdes Estates City Council on Tuesday approved several parking changes in the city’s commercial areas.

Officials hope to improve parking on the deck behind City Hall by removing signs reserving spaces for specific businesses, by providing four spaces for City Hall guest parking and by leasing parking spaces to more businesses.

Planning Director Cathy Reed said parking spaces on the deck are marked as exclusive parking for individual businesses, but the lot is never more than half full. She said that, by not designating a specific space for each lessee and by overselling the lot by 20%, parking space can be provided for more people.

At Malaga Cove Plaza, where parking spaces are always filled, the spaces adjacent to the buildings will be changed from 20- to 30-minute parking to allow more time for banking and shopping. Parking on the south side of the Neptune fountain will be designated for one-hour parking and all other slots will be marked for two-hour parking. One-hour and two-hour parking have been scattered throughout the lot.

At Lunada Bay, two spaces will be designated 10-minute parking for customers of a liquor store and a video store. Spaces on Palos Verdes Drive West will be two-hour slots and new spaces will be marked on Via Anacapa, in front of the site of a former Shell service station.

The changes were made at the recommendation of the city’s Parking Advisory Committee and will be effective within a month.
