Del Mar
About 1,400 gallons of sewage spilled onto the streets of Del Mar Thursday, officials said.
The spill, classified as small by county health authorities, began when a sewer main became blocked and spilled out of a manhole at 9th Street and Camino del Mar.
The sewage ran down the street and entered a nearby storm drain, which empties onto the beach at the end of 9th Street.
Signs warning of the contamination were posted 100 feet north and south of where the storm drain empties onto the beach and will remain in place for 24 hours. Officials do not know what caused the sewer main blockage.
