LOS ALAMITOS : Movin North, Merriette Head Lassie Handicap Field

Town Policy Handicap winner Movin North and Los Alamitos Derby runner-up Merriette share high weight heading a field of sophomore fillies in tonight’s Lassie Handicap at Los Alamitos Race Course.

The 400-yard Lassie offers a $25,000 added purse.

Here’s how they’ll line up for the Lassie Handicap with jockey and weight assignments: To Toast (James Lackey, 120); Merriette (Bruce Pilkenton, 123); Come Azure Are (Kip Didericksen, 122); So Cal Gal (Steve Treasure, 121); Smashed Jewel (John Creager, 121); Lucks Fiesta Miss (Lute Proctor, 120); Telesis Too (Roman Figueroa, 120); Movin North (Danny Cardoza, 123); The Jetaway Caper (Ralph Seville, 118), and Coda Lark (James Brooks, 118).

Movin North, the daughter of Easy Dozen is two-for-two this year, including a major upset in a division of the Town Policy Handicap on April 20 at Los Alamitos. Racing at 15-1 odds in the Town Policy, Movin North was never headed while posting a neck win over Dadburn Swift under the guidance of veteran rider Danny Cardoza.

Merriette has won four of six starts and finished second in her remaining two outings. The most impressive performance came on May 12, when Bruce Pilkenton missed the winner’s share by a nose in the $111,000 Los Alamitos Derby.

Before that, Merriette captured the Redwood City and Debutante Handicaps at Bay Meadows.

Come Azure Are has the talent to upset either of the two top weights. The Azure Request daughter ran out more than $12,000 last year, finishing a neck behind So Cal Gal in the La Jolla Handicap last year at Los Al.

After opening her sophomore campaign with a third in allowance company, trainer Bob Baffert saddled the Oklahoma-bred miss to the second-fastest qualifying time for the Los Alamitos Derby. She finished third in the finals.

On Saturday night, Apprehend and Ourautograph will carry high weights of 123 pounds in the $25,000 Laddie Handicap at Los Alamitos.
