NAMES IN THE NEWS : Estefan Wins Music Award

Gloria Estefan of Miami Sound Machine received the crossover artist of the year award in the second annual Latin music awards.

The male artists of the year were Luis Enrique, tropical-salsa; Chayanne, pop-ballad, and Vicente Fernandez, Mexican regional.

Ana Gabriel won the female artist of the year award, only presented in the pop-ballad category. Her “Tierra de Nadie” was the pop-ballad album of the year. In a new category, singer Celia Cruz was given a lifetime achievement award Thursday night.

The award program was created last year by the Spanish-language television network Univision and Billboard magazine to recognize excellence in the Latin music industry. Awards were given in special categories, plus pop-ballad, tropical-salsa and Mexican regional.
