NCAA SOFTBALL WORLD SERIES : UCLA Freshman Throws Another Shutout, 6-0

UCLA’s Lisa Fernandez extended her scoreless inning streak to 50 as the Bruins defeated Cal State Long Beach, 6-0, Friday in the second round of the NCAA softball World Series at Oklahoma City.

Fernandez, a freshman from Lakewood St. Joseph High, gave up only four hits to earn her 11th victory in a row. She’s 11-1.

Sophomore center fielder Yvonne Gutierrez, who was walked intentionally in her first two at-bats, went two for two, both doubles, and drove in three runs. Her fifth-inning double drove in the first two runs.

UCLA (59-6), seeking its third consecutive national championship, has not given up a run in postseason play. The Bruins beat Northern Iowa, 2-0 and 4-0, in the West Regional, and in the first round of the Series Wednesday, they beat Kent State, 4-0.

The loss was the first in the double-elimination tournament for Long Beach (48-18). The 49ers beat Nevada Las Vegas Wednesday, 2-0.

UNLV (41-26) stayed alive by eliminating Kent State, 5-2. A three-run double by Kim Harris in the fourth inning keyed the victory. Kent State finished 43-9.

In another elimination game, Fresno State beat Arizona, 1-0. Fresno State is 59-14; Arizona is 49-17.
