Heritage Day--Oak Canyon Nature Center holds its annual Heritage Day celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Sunday. The event, co-sponsored by the Canyon Hills Junior Women’s Club, will explore the history of the West with demonstrations of early California arts and crafts, butter churning, weaving and story-telling.

There will also be continuous live entertainment, along with pony rides and Indian face-painting for the children. Also, a tree-planting ceremony is slated.

Admission is free. Refreshments will be available. Free shuttle bus service will be offered from nearby Anaheim Hills Golf Course. The nature center is at 6700 East Walnut Canyon Road in Anaheim Hills. Information: (714) 998-8380.

Tree Planting--Upper Newport Bay will get some new trees in a planting from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Sponsors include the California Department of Fish and Game, Orange County Harbors, Beaches and Parks Department, El Ranchito Restaurant and Newport Dunes.

The family event with Mexican food will be held at Big Canyon and Back Bay drives in Newport Beach. Information: (714) 640-6746.

Paddle Day--Those interested in the growing sport of sea kayaking can mark June 16 on their calendars. Paddle Sports Expo ’90 will be held at Newport Dunes and will offer visitors the chance to try out all manner of paddlecraft in the calm waters of Newport Bay.

Sea, river, surfing and racing kayaks, along with squirt boats, canoes, surf skis, wave skis, outriggers and river rafts, will be on the beach from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to test and purchase. Instructors, guides and retailers will be on hand to answer questions, and paddling demonstrations are planned.

Among other activities is a cardboard boat race, in which participants build boats from cardboard and duct tape and try to complete the course in one piece. A barbecue and beach party will be held from 6:30 to 10 p.m.

After 7:30 p.m., sea kayaker Eric Soares will show his video “Adventures of the Tsunami Rangers” and clips from his newest project, “Mastering the Marine Environment.”

The expo is sponsored by Tustin-based Southwind Sports Resource, which offers kayak instruction. Admission is $2.50 to $5, plus parking. For more information, call (714) 857-5298 after Friday.
