CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : CUPERTINO : Two Fires Damage Digital Equipment
Two blazes struck Digital Equipment Corp., causing more than $300,000 in damage to a fumes incinerator and a computer component assembly area, fire officials said. The fires of unknown origin broke out in separate areas of the three-building complex, but foul play was not suspected, Santa Clara County fire officials said. There were no injuries. The heaviest damage was caused when an explosion occurred inside a natural-gas incinerator used to eliminate manufacturing fumes. No toxic fumes were detected, officials said. The other fire broke out in a large plastic sink containing acid used for plating in the assembly of computer components. The blaze caused about $20,000 damage to the sink, but $100,000 in smoke and soot damage to equipment in the so-called “clean room,” officials said.
