TAXABLE SALES ACTIVITY

Taxable sales in Orange County totaled $6.9 billion in third-quarter 1989, the most recent period for which information is available. That was a 1.8% increase from second-quarter 1989. It was also 8.6% more than third-quarter 1988 and 18.2% above third-quarter 1987.

Retail sales alone performed slightly better, increasing 2.3% from second-quarter 1989 and 9.1% and 17.6% from third-quarter 1988 and 1987, respectively.

Retail sales in every city but Irvine and La Palma increased, led by the 53.5% in Tustin. Overall, taxable sales increased everywhere except La Palma with the largest jump, 48.8%, also taking place in Tustin.

FIVE-COUNTY COMPARISONO range County’s increased retail and total taxable sales increases followed a pattern around Southern California and the state. All four of the contiguous counties had increases in both categories, with the largest jumps occurring in Riverside County. Orange County changes in both retail and total taxable sales fell below the five-county and statewide marks.
