“Native Heart” doesn’t deviate from the classic jazz quintet sound Williams has been mining as a composer/bandleader, and the deja vu factor plays against the drummer’s fourth album with his working group. Saxophonist Bill Pierce and trumpeter Wallace Roney harmonize and solo capably, pianist Mulgrew Miller comps tastefully (although he’s mixed too high) and the redoubtable Williams unleashes his trademark flurries from the drum chair. The title track’s moody, rainy day flavor and the sassy but overextended blues strut of “Juicy Fruit” are high spots on an album that’s long on expert craftsmanship but a bit short on dynamic flair.
