From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

Five men robbed a jewelry store of up to $500,000 in diamonds, cash and expensive watches but three were arrested after chases and wrecks involving getaway cars, police said. The robbery in a shopping center Friday was similar to a string of jewelry store robberies in California that police believe are the work of a group tied to Southern California street gangs and dubbed the “I-5 Flyers.” Two of the robbers were arrested after they crashed a stolen car, police said. The car was taken from a woman who grabbed her small child and fled despite the robbers’ demand she leave the child behind. A third suspect was captured while attempting to flee on foot from another of the cars stolen after the five split up, police said. Two of the men in custody were identified as Mark McNabb, 27, and Horace Greg Edwards, 26, both of the Los Angeles area.
