COUNTYWIDE : Gates to Push Stand on Seized Drug Loot

Orange County Sheriff Brad Gates, who has long argued with the Board of Supervisors about how best to spend money and assets seized in drug raids, plans to attend the board session today and is expected to address the controversial topic again, officials said Monday.

Gates, who rarely makes an appearance at the supervisors’ meetings, was unavailable for comment Monday, but Sheriff’s Lt. Richard J. Olson said that Gates’ calendar indicated that he intends to be at the session. Citizens, including county officials, are allowed to address the board at any of its public meetings.

Board members will be receiving a long-awaited report at today’s session in which county officials argue that drug-forfeiture money and assets should be used for a variety of law enforcement purposes. Gates has long advocated using those assets for fighting drugs while the board has leaned toward the county officials’ view.
