Bill Buckner, who won a job in spring training after signing a minor league contract at age 40, was released Tuesday by the Boston Red Sox.

Buckner was let go to make room on the 25-player roster for right-handed pitcher Jeff Gray, who was called up from Pawtucket of the International League.

Buckner appeared in 22 games for Boston, batting .186 with one homer and three runs batted in. In eight starts, he was six for 30, including an inside-the-park homer when then-Angels’ right fielder Claudell Washington fell into the stands at Fenway Park.
