QUEBEC — Right winger Guy Lafleur, at 38, said today he will play one more NHL season with the Quebec Nordiques.
Lafleur retired from the Montreal Canadiens in 1984, only to make a much-heralded return with the New York Rangers in 1988. He played for the Nordiques last season.
“I’m announcing I’m going play one more year but I’m also announcing I’m going to retire after it,” Lafleur told a news conference. “Every good thing must come to an end.”
Lafleur will remain with the Nordiques in some capacity after the 1990-91 season, he and General Manager Pierre Page said.
Lafleur was the team’s third-highest scorer last year, with 12 goals and 22 assists, despite playing in only 39 games.
The Nordiques had the league’s poorest record last season, only 12 victories in 80 games.
