Ban on Camping Reaffirmed

Share

The Carson City Council on Tuesday reaffirmed a decision to ban camping on public property.

The council originally approved the measure as an urgency ordinance May 1 so that it could go into effect before fans of the Grateful Dead rock group arrived in Carson for concerts at Cal State Dominguez Hills on May 5 and 6.

In addition to prohibiting camping, the ordinance bars sleeping on public property between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and permits police to seize property being sold by unauthorized street vendors.

After the concerts, neighbors complained about traffic congestion, loitering and public urination.

Although the ordinance was passed as an urgency measure, Carson City Atty. Glenn Watson recommended that the council pass the measure as a regular ordinance as well. The vote was unanimous.
