AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Bobby Witt Changes Losing Ways and Rangers Beat Athletics

Bobby Witt, tied for the American League lead in defeats, struck out 11 Thursday night and pitched the Texas Rangers to a 3-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics at Arlington, Tex.

Witt (3-7) gave up six hits and walked three in eight innings and won for the first time since May 12.

Kenny Rogers pitched the ninth inning for his second save as the Rangers ended a five-game losing streak against Oakland.

Mike Moore (4-6) lost for the fifth time in his last six starts, giving up a solo homer to Rafael Palmeiro in the first inning and Pete Incaviglia’s two-run shot in the fourth.

Walt Weiss hit a run-scoring triple off Witt in the seventh.

Detroit 8, Cleveland 0--Hot-hitting Cecil Fielder drove in two runs and Brian DuBois scattered four singles in eight innings as the Tigers won at Cleveland.

Fielder hit a two-run single in the third inning to make it 2-0 and increase his major league-leading RBI total to 55.

DuBois (3-3) struck out four, walked one and won for the third time in four starts.

Toronto 10, Minnesota 3--George Bell and Fred McGriff each homered and doubled as the Blue Jays won at Toronto.

Kelly Gruber hit his 16th homer and Tony Fernandez got four of Toronto’s 16 hits. Fernandez and Mookie Wilson both hit two doubles, as the Blue Jays set a team record with eight two-base hits.

Todd Stottlemyre (5-6) held the Twins to two runs in eight innings.

Boston 3, New York 0--Greg Harris pitched one-hit ball for eight innings and the Red Sox completed their first four-game sweep of New York at Boston since 1969.

Harris (5-3) struck out seven and walked none, allowing a single by Jesse Barfield in the fifth inning. Jody Reed and Mike Greenwell had run-scoring singles off Tim Leary (3-7) in the third.

Seattle 2, Chicago 1--Randy Johnson, who pitched a no-hitter in his last outing, threw a five-hitter and the Mariners won at Chicago.

Seattle broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning when reliever Barry Jones attempted to pick Henry Cotto off first base, but the throw got past Carlos Martinez for an error, allowing Brian Giles to score.

Baltimore 5, Milwaukee 2--Joe Orsulak drove in two runs and Craig Worthington homered for the second game in a row as the Orioles completed a 9-4 trip by winning at Milwaukee.

Dave Johnson (5-3) shut out the Brewers until Paul Molitor hit a two-run homer in the eighth.

Orsulak hit a two-run single and Cal Ripken followed with a run-scoring single against Paul Mirabella (2-1) in the fifth.
