Repenting: Cable TV mogul Ted Turner has promised to apologize for calling Christianity “a religion for losers” when he speaks at the First Baptist Church of Woodstock, Ga., Wednesday. “He wants a chance to apologize to the world, but (he might) say other things we might not like,” said the Rev. Johnny Hunt. Turner criticized Christians last year and again last month; Hunt speculated maybe Turner “hasn’t met the right ones.”

Banning: Rising hemlines in Israel’s parliament have prompted a member to campaign for a ban on miniskirts there. “What is inappropriate . . . is women who walk around in minis or maybe less than minis--almost everything shows. You don’t need a wild imagination to see what’s going on,” said Shlomo Dayan of the ultra-religious Shas party in Jerusalem. Ultra-orthodox Jews believe women should dress modestly, covering their arms, legs and heads. Army radio said Dayan was collecting signatures to support a ban.

Celebrating: First Lady Barbara Bush’s 65th birthday today will pass quietly because she dislikes big, sentimental “public displays” on her birthday. Spokeswoman Anna Perez said when the First Lady was asked about birthday plans, she “cut off the conversation abruptly.” Bush will be spending a quiet weekend at the Camp David retreat with her husband.
