Lighting Up U.S.-Mexico Border Area
The column was very disturbing. The cited incidents of unprovoked violence against Latinos were reprehensible and inexcusable.
But the authors exposed their own xenophobia when they labeled as “vigilantes” U.S. citizens who passively use their auto headlights to illuminate areas where many illegal aliens sneak across the border. The authors twice used the euphemism “undocumented immigrants,” but carefully avoided admitting that the subjects of this action are, in fact, criminals.
Tragically, the authors only added fuel to the fire by their implication that it’s OK to violate U.S. laws as long as you’re a Latino.
