Guy C. McElroy, 44, an art historian who organized an exhibition on the portrayal of black people in American art. McElroy conceived the show, “Facing History: The Black Image in American Art, 1710-1940,” four years ago and was guest curator at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, where the exhibition opened last January. The exhibit is now at the Brooklyn Museum in New York. McElroy had held curatorial posts in museums and public galleries on the East and West coasts since the mid-1970s. He had recently begun work on an exhibition on black educator Mary McLeod Bethune for the Bethune Museum-Archive in Washington. In Washington on May 31 of a pulmonary embolism.
