South County Surfers: ‘Golden Boys’ or ‘Princes of Darkness’?

I truly hope everyone who reads The Times will remember that surfers are generally people who ride waves. On the whole they are a fun-loving group of people who share a common love of playing in the ocean.

Most of the young “grommets” who are now learning the ropes at the shoreline are a lot mellower than their forefathers. Professionalism and outright courtesy are now common. These “kids” you have labeled as “surfers” are not surfers. They are “kids” who may someday be surfers.

You see, surfers are people who know how to share, respect others. Since the water is now quite full of people who want to have fun, those of us who have continued to “surf” have had to learn these attributes so we don’t go the way of others who have given up.

Salt Creek is becoming increasingly popular. It’s possible these “kids” don’t understand other people. If these “kids” become “surfers” they may travel to faraway places, and I hope this will open their eyes and show to them how important it is to help each other on their path through life.
