From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A Food and Drug Administration investigator was trying to pinpoint the source of contamination in a solution that infected eight heart bypass patients, two of whom died. The patients at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, Neb., are believed to have been infected by a contaminated batch of glutamate-aspartate, used in a solution to paralyze the heart during open-heart surgery. Two of the remaining six infected patients were in the intensive care unit. All six were listed in stable condition. The hospital also is asking the federal Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta to help determine how the solution became contaminated.
