The government appealed to residents of a populated valley to be calm as a series of more than 30 earthquakes, the strongest a magnitude 4.9, shook the area.

The national seismological center said the main quake hit at 6:30 p.m. Friday and lasted for 5 1/2 minutes, rattling homes and cracking the main highway leading to the town of Santiago de Puriscal. No injuries were reported.

The seismological center said that, of the more than 30 quakes detected since midnight, seven were between magnitude 3 and 4.5. The National Emergency Commission appealed for calm.
