Defending champion Argentina, reeling from its loss to unheralded Cameroon in the World Cup opener, plans to change its lineup and tactics for Wednesday’s Group B game with the Soviet Union.

Coach Carlos Bilardo said he will start attacker Claudio Caniggia in place of Abel Balbo, who was ineffective against Cameroon. Caniggia is a favorite of superstar Diego Maradona.

Both teams suffered upset losses in their Group B openers, making the match in Naples a virtual must-win to advance to the second round.

Bilardo said Argentina will seek holes in the Soviet defense by attacking from the sides. When asked about other modifications, he said: “You’ll see them on the field.”

In addition to starting Caniggia, Bilardo said he might play defender Jose Serrizuela in place of Oscar Ruggeri and midfielder Julio Olarticoechea for Roberto Sensini.
