Cavuoto Concedes Defeat to Kimbrough

One of two front-runners in the 42nd Congressional District’s Democratic primary conceded defeat Monday to the apparent winner, Huntington Beach resident Guy C. Kimbrough.

James Cavuoto of Torrance said he decided to concede after partial results released Monday in a continuing tally of absentee ballots in Los Angeles and Orange counties showed Kimbrough leading by 142 votes. A third candidate, Bryan W. Stevens of Rolling Hills Estates, trailed by 1,284 votes.

Cavuoto said that with a relatively small number of 42nd District ballots remaining to be counted, the margin separating him from Kimbrough appeared too broad to bridge. Final results are not expected for at least two weeks.

If his victory is verified, Kimbrough, a political science teacher at Mt. San Jacinto College, will face U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Lomita) in the Nov. 6 general election. In the 1988 general election match-up, Kimbrough lost to Rohrabacher, 33% to 64%.
