WORLD IN BRIEF : PHILIPPINES : 5 Prisoners Killed in Attempted Jailbreak
A former provincial governor serving a life term for murder led an attempted jailbreak, and five prisoners were killed in a shoot-out with guards. Another prisoner and three guards were wounded during the gun battle at the National Penitentiary in suburban Muntinlupa, Justice Secretary Franklin Drilon said. The attempted break was led by former Nueva Vizcaya Gov. Orlando Dulay, who was serving a life term for killing three campaign workers of President Corazon Aquino before the February, 1986, presidential elections.
