5 Students Among Essay Contest Winners

Five high school students from the San Gabriel Valley are among the winners in the 1990 Skirball Essay Contest sponsored by the Los Angeles-based Skirball Institute on American Values.

Nearly 2,000 students in Western states submitted essays on an American value they consider to be of particular significance.

Local winners, all of whom received third-prize awards, are: Kelsey Brown, Pasadena, Mayfield Senior School; George Huang, Pasadena, Blair High School; Helen Liu, Walnut, San Dimas High School; Carole Smith, Rowland Heights, Rowland High School, and Rebecca Walls, Covina, Northview High School.
