A 2 1/2-year-old boy died early Friday morning, about 12 hours after being pulled from an irrigation canal on the San Pasqual Indian Reservation in Valley Center.
Bani Reyes, who was under water for about 10 minutes before he was rescued, died from respiratory failure and brain damage at 2:10 a.m. at Children’s Hospital, spokesman Mark Morelli said.
The canal runs behind the home of Miguel Reyes, the boy’s father.
