West Germany easily qualified for the second round of the World Cup Friday, beating the United Arab Emirates 5-1.

Rudi Voeller’s two goals sparked a persistent attack, as the West Germans showed in a 4-1 victory over Yugoslavia in their first game. He and fellow striker Juergen Klinsmann scored late in the first half before K.I. Mubarak scored a surprise goal at the start of the second half, the United Arab Emirates’ first-ever goal in the World Cup.

A minute later, West German captain Lothar Matthaeus scored his third goal in two matches. He and Voeller share the tournament scoring lead.

Uwe Bein also scored with a strong drive, and Voeller headed home the final goal.

With its second strong showing, West Germany virtually assured that the United Arab Emirates would not advance. The United Arab Emirates lost to Colombia, 2-0, in its first game.

West Germany will play Colombia, and Yugoslavia will play the United Arab Emirates in the last Group D matches Tuesday.

“We made some small mistakes, but generally speaking I am satisfied,” West German coach Franz Beckenbauer said.

In all, West Germany had 23 shots on goal; the United Arab Emirates had two. The crowd of more than 70,000 included thousands of Germans.

“Our opponents were too quick for us, the Germans were too strong,” said Carlos Alberto Parreira, coach of the United Arab Emirates.
