If you’re planning a trip to Vancouver, remember A Kettle of Fish, 900 Pacific St. An enjoyable restaurant that features fresh fish/seafood. (Salmon from the Pacific Northwest, lobster, prawns, crab, scallops, clams, mussels, smoked Alaska cod.) Marvelous desserts. Entrees: $9.95/$21.95. This restaurant is popular with locals. If you’re in a rush at lunchtime, try the Olympic Oyster & Fish Company, 1094 Robson St. (around the corner from the Meredien Hotel). A funky little place with 10 stools, two counters. Fast service. Specialty: fish and chips.

A few doors away, the Old Heidelberg, 1164 Robson St., prepares a smorgasbord, “all you can eat”, for $6.25. In this same neighborhood, there’s a French restaurant called the Cote d’Azur that prepares marvelous homemade fish soups. Entrees include chicken in green pepper sauce, calves liver in a cream sauce with shallots and raspberry vinegar, rabbit in mustard sauce, roast duckling in Pernod. Surprisingly inexpensive ($19.95 tops).

The Cote d’Azur is sheltered in an old (1904) three-story Victorian mansion at 1216 Robson St. Recorded French melodies. Lace tablecloths from Normandy. Candlelight. Red roses. Hotels/Germany: Germany’s National Tourist Office has a couple of interesting hotel offers this year. One is the popular WunderCheck that can be purchased from travel agents and is redeemable at about 100 hotels throughout Germany. Rates: $42 per person for accommodations, breakfast, taxes, gratuities. In some instances, the host even provides dinner. The other offer is a DanubeCheck (same price) that’s good at 15 hotels along the Danube River in Germany/Austria.

This year’s B&B; listings in Germany include zimmers with an average price of about $10/$20 per person. Look for signs in front of homes reading zimmer frei. Also gaining favor: farm stays.

Budget Hawaii: We’ve had inquiries lately concerning inexpensive Hawaii packages. Your travel agent has details about the one-week vacations offered by Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays. High and Mighty: After 10 years as a balloon pilot in Peru, Africa and New Mexico, Alan Ehrgott came down to Earth in Coloma, Calif., where he and his wife Cindy operate a B&B.; This is no ordinary inn. Besides accommodations, Ehrgott takes his guests on balloon rides. Skims rivers and white-water rapids. A great opportunity to photograph wildlife on the ground. Ehrgott’s Inn (an 1852 farmhouse) is in the heart of Gold Discovery State Park (a short stroll from Sutter’s Mill). Picnic sites close by. Inn of the Week: Southern comfort is featured at the Rhett House Inn in Beaufort, S.C. This is the original home of a Southern aristocrat. Homespun quilts, fresh flowers. Only a block from Beaufort’s restored waterfront (good for strolling/eyeballing traffic on the Intercoastal Waterway).

Your hosts will prepare a picnic lunch. Bicycles available. Only a short ride to the beach. The inn is convenient for day-trips to Charleston, Hilton Head, Savannah.

California Hideaway: Closer to home, Mary Davies continues to get high points for the inn in Northern California she calls Ten Inverness Way. A one-time family summer home with four guest rooms, private baths, a hot tub. Antique beds with handmade quilts. A living room with a fireplace (the perfect escape for readers, snoozers). Guests insist that Davies’ banana buttermilk/buckwheat pancakes alone make the trip worthwhile. This is rural country. Not far from Point Reyes National Seashore.

A Small Hotel: When Manou and Vesta Mobedshahi opened The Sherman House in San Francisco several years ago, it was an instant success. Many regard The Sherman House as one of the world’s finest small luxury hotels. Now the Mobedshahis have opened a second hotel, The Savoy. Caters to the “price-conscious guest.” Rooms start at $84. Provence-style furnishings. Down-filled mattresses, pillows, fresh flowers.

Rent an Island: If you get lucky and hit the Lotto and have all those bucks to burn, here’s a thought: rent an island. Drake’s Anchorage Resort Inn rises on an exquisite small island in the British West Indies. Only a five-minute boat ride from Virgin Gorda and a short flight from St. Thomas. You can rent the entire island (125 acres, four beaches, two villas, a dozen ocean-front accommodations) for $2,300 a night (up to 20 guests) or $7,500 for five days. (Obviously, this isn’t for the bargain hunter.)

If you don’t win the Lotto and can afford only a night or so, the rate per couple with breakfast, lunch and dinner comes to $215 a day double in the low season (April to Dec. 17) or $165 single, plus tax and service charge.
