Share

The City Council has approved a contract for design work on the new central library.

The council voted unanimously to hire the San Francisco firm of Simon, Martin-Vegue and Winkelstein to design the building over the next 17 months. Newport Beach architect James Pirdy will work with the San Francisco firm. A total of $827,730 has been allocated for architectural fees.

The library is expected to open by 1993.

In an agreement with the Irvine Co., the city will receive four acres of land near the corner of Avocado Avenue and East Coast Highway for the library. In return, the Irvine Co. will receive 1.97 acres of land in Newport Center, at the corner of San Clemente and Santa Barbara. The city will also grant the company entitlement rights for 65,550 square feet of office space at the Newport Center site.

In addition, the city guaranteed the Irvine Co. the right to transfer its building entitlements from the Avocado/East Coast Highway site to either the Corporate Plaza planned community or the Corporate Plaza West area. Any building on those sites would still have to meet city traffic-limit requirements.
