An off-duty sheriff’s deputy visiting friends in Lake View Terrace shot and critically wounded a man who broke into the house, threatened a woman acquaintance and attacked the deputy, Los Angeles police reported.

Marshall Robinson, 25, a deputy for two years, told police that he shot Mario G. Thompson, 32, several times in the chest Sunday night after Thompson broke into the house in the 10300 block of Foothill Boulevard, Detective Gary Milligan said.

Police said Thompson and one of the four women residents of the house were acquainted but refused to elaborate.

After Thompson entered the house, Robinson identified himself as a sheriff’s deputy and ordered Thompson to leave, but Thompson instead charged the deputy, Milligan said.

As the two men fought, Robinson drew his service revolver and fired several shots into Thompson’s upper torso, police said. Robinson was reported in critical condition Monday afternoon at Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills.

Milligan said police would present the information to the district attorney’s office to decide whether criminal charges should be filed against Thompson or Robinson.
