Molina, Alatorre Doubt Canyon’s Cultural Status

Two inner-city lawmakers on Monday questioned a proposal to designate 31 acres of Fryman Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains as a city cultural-historical monument and referred the question to their colleagues on the Los Angeles City Council without a recommendation.

Council members Richard Alatorre and Gloria Molina, members of the Council’s Arts, Health and Humanities Committee, said they found the logic of declaring all or part of the canyon a cultural-historic monument hard to fathom.

The city’s Cultural Heritage Board recommended monument status May 17. The proposal is backed by environmentalists and several public officials, including Mayor Tom Bradley.

In questioning the measure, Molina told supporters of monument status that she feared they were misusing the city’s cultural heritage law to stop a development project.
