Arraignment Delayed for Japanese Theft Suspect

Share

Arraignment was delayed Monday for a former top official of the Japanese city of Nagoya who is accused of stealing $450 in leather goods from a gift shop at Los Angeles International Airport.

Yukio Umemura did not appear in court in Los Angeles for the brief hearing on the grand theft charge. Municipal Court Commissioner Stephen Leventhal rescheduled his arraignment for July 3.

The alleged April 14 shoplifting incident, which occurred just before Umemura was to board a flight to Japan, was followed by his resignation as chairman of the Nagoya City Assembly.
