Education Dept. Lauds Program at East L.A.
The Upward Bound Program of East Los Angeles College has been selected as one of 10 National Exemplary Educational Opportunities Programs by the U.S. Department of Education.
Upward Bound, the college’s preparatory program for disadvantaged high school students, is aimed at students from low-income families who will be first-generation college students.
The program recruits underachieving students and those who have not expressed intentions of attending college. Participants receive individual attention during high school to help them improve their study and academic skills.
Officials of the Monterey Park-based college said 95% of the participants stay in the program, and 98% of those who stay go on to enroll in college.
