Schools Will Net $130,000

Peninsula Education Foundation’s “Main Event VIII” held May 5 at the proposed Ritz-Carlton site in Rancho Palos Verdes, was attended by 900 guests. Chuck Miller and Bob Modzelski of Aztec Rental underwrote the dinner tent housing. The fund-raiser benefited PEF by $130,000 to be used to fund programs in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District. Ann Pappas and Jill Schultz chaired the event.

* City of Hope’s Insurance Council of California raised $250,000 at the 12th annual achievement award dinner honoring David R. Carpenter on May 17. Proceeds from the black-tie event, which attracted 600 guests to the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel, will establish a research fellowship at the medical center in recognition of Carpenter, chairman and CEO Of Transamerica Occidental Life Insurance Co. Louis J. Caron of Ernst & Young chaired the event.

* Give Kids the World Foundation has received $1,000 from the Royal Beauty and Achievement Alliance beauty pageant benefit on May 22 at Holiday Inn, Thousand Oaks. The money will be used to grant wishes to terminally ill children. The pageant was produced by Charlie Roberts.

* The Sephardic Hebrew Academy’s annual dinner on May 23 at Beverly Hilton Hotel honored Arthur Hiller, president of the Directors Guild of America. More than $500,000 was netted for scholarships to students who would otherwise be unable to attend the academy. Howard W. Koch was honorary chair. James Stewart was tribute co-chair.

* Variety Children’s Charities black-tie celebrity convention benefit was held May 29. The event netted more than $100,000 to be used to assist underprivileged, handicapped and emotionally disturbed children. Ric Roman, of the Variety International board of directors, was chairman.

* Wellness Community-South Bay Cities benefited from a patron’s dinner June 3 at the Radisson Plaza Hotel and Golf Course in Manhattan Beach. The hotel and Chez Melanges sponsored the event. Proceeds of $30,000 will be used to continue ongoing programs such as counseling and support for cancer patients and their families.

* American Heart Assn. “Celebrity Waiter a La Heart” featured a multicourse, heart-healthy gourmet dinner June 3 at Geoffrey’s in Malibu which netted $23,000. Expenses for dinner and cocktails were underwritten by Geoffrey’s Restaurant and Malibu Bay Co. Proceeds will be used by AHA for outreach educational programs and medical research.

* Operation Exodus, the Los Angeles community-wide campaign to resettle Soviet Jews in Israel, has raised $13.3 million in pledges as of June 12. The phone-a-thon campaign began eight weeks ago. Funds raised go directly to Israel to finance Soviet Jews’ transportation, housing, education and other relocation expenses.

* Vital Options netted $45,000 at its “Making A Difference” tribute dinner June 13 at the Tower at Century Plaza Hotel. Proceeds will be used for ongoing free psychosocial support services to young adults 17 to 40 with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Michael Tucker and Lee Remick were co-hosts.

* Hathaway Children’s Services reported contributions totaling $74,000 from its two support groups, Valley League for Hathaway and Hathaway Auxiliary. The money will be used to fund Hathaway’s programs for children. The Valley League raised $27,000 at its picnic featuring Montie Montana at Paramount Ranch; Hathaway Auxiliary raised $47,000 at its May 5 spring dinner dance at the Riviera County Club. Hathaway is one of the largest private nonprofit children’s agencies in California.
