SPORTSCOPE : Golfers Find the Range for Aces at South Bay Courses

Three South Bay golfers recorded holes in one recently, with two of the aces occurring on the same hole but on different days.

Donald F. Howard of Carson and Robert Misetich of San Pedro recorded aces on the par-three, 134-yard eighth hole at Harbor Park in Wilmington. It was Misetich’s first hole in one.

Norifumi Gennai of Torrance used a four-iron to score an ace on the par-three, 206-yard 12th hole at Rancho Park. According to starter Peeny Siebrandt, Gennai’s tee shot landed on the front edge of the green and rolled the final three feet into the cup.

Competition in ocean swimming and other water eventgs, part of the fourth annual Ocean Festival Series sponsored by the Professional Surf Lifesaving Assn., will be held at the Manhattan Beach Pier on Saturday and Sunday. Information: (213) 456-7343. An amateur body-boarding contest takes place Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. in conjunction with the festival. Competition in the 23rd annual Los Angeles Summer Games, formerly called the Los Angeles-Watts Summer Games, opens Saturday at sites across the Los Angeles area.

There will be more than 10,000 high school athletes competing in 12 sports. The games originated as a response to the 1965 Watts riots and are designed to serve as a positive alternative to serve as a positive alternative to drugs and gangs for Southern California youths.

The sponsor of the event is the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce. Past participants include Laker guards Byron Scott and Michael Cooper, professional basebal players Darryl Strawberry and Eric Davis, and Olympians Jeanette Bolden, Valerie Brisco-Hooks, and Dwight Stones.

Admission to all L.A. Games events is free.

Backup midfielder Tim Graefe of Torrance has been released by Real Santa Barbra of the American Professional Soccer League West.

Graefe’s father, Dave, is a co-owner of the Los Angeles Heat, which plays host to Santa Barbara Saturday night at West Torrance High. The Heat is in second place in the league’s Southern Division, four points behind Santa Barbara.
