A Ventura High School sophomore will be among six students representing the state at the International Leadership Seminar, a conference that attracts students from around the world.

Sean Osborne, 16, was selected from among 225 students who competed at Pepperdine University in a leadership seminar sponsored by the nonprofit foundation earlier this month.

Sean, who will represent central California, will be among more than 200 students from 30 countries, including the Soviet Union and China, at the all-expense-paid conference in St. Paul, Minn. in July.

Students were nominated to participate on the basis of recommendations from their high school principals, said program director Bob Shirilla. Finalists were selected based on their performance in essay writing and interviews before a panel of judges, he said.

The conference is sponsored by the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Foundation, a national, nonprofit organization founded in 1958 that aims to promote leadership skills and critical thinking among high school sophomores.
