Thomas V. Jones, chairman of Northrop Corp., has received the “Tribute to Aerospace” award, presented by Pete Knight, chairman of the Flight Test Historical Foundation. Jones accepted the award on behalf of Northrop employees who conceived and developed the first flying-wing aircraft more than 50 years ago, and the Air Force’s newest and most technologically advanced bomber, the B-2.

Walfred Lester, mathematics teacher at Rolling Hills High School, has been selected as a recipient of the Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished High School Mathematics Teaching, according to an announcement by the Mathematical Assn. of America. Lester is one of 23 teachers selected for this recognition from high schools in the United States and Canada.

Lt. Jeffrey R. Cameron of the Redondo Beach Police Department is one of 21 police managers and executives graduating this month from the California Law Enforcement Command College. The Command College is a leadership development program sponsored by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. During the two-year program, law enforcement officers are exposed to new ways of thinking about the future and its relationship to society and the communities they serve. Cameron has been with the Redondo Beach Police Department since February, 1971. He received his doctorate in public administration from Pacific Western University in Los Angeles. He graduated from Cal State Dominguez Hills and received a master’s degree in public administration from USC.

More than $30,000 was raised for the Wellness Community-South Bay Cities at the recent Patron’s Dinner sponsored by the Radisson Plaza Hotel and Golf Course. More than 300 guests attended the five-course dinner, which was prepared by 36 “undiscovered chefs”: doctors, lawyers, realtors, dentists, bankers and businessmen from the South Bay. During the evening, guests welcomed David Mahoney as the new executive director of the Wellness Community-South Bay Cities and said farewell to outgoing Director Marian Mohr. The Wellness Community provides free professional counseling and support programs for cancer patients and their families.

Mal Packer, chief engineer for the Los Angeles Department of Air ports, accepted a certificate of appreciation from Judy Nutter, deputy to Councilwoman Ruth Galanter. The commendation cited Packer’s efforts in helping to “further the common goal of making our city a better place to live.” Earlier this year, Packer received the Outstanding Engineer Merit Award-1990 from the Institute for the Advancement of Engineering.

Doyle Z. Williams of Torrance was awarded $5,000 and named the 1990 Outstanding Accounting Educator by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Williams is the holder of the KPMG Peat Marwick Foundation Professorship in Accounting at USC School of Business Administration’s school of accounting. He was founding dean of the USC school of accounting.

The Rev. E. W. Dierker was honored recently upon his retirement as pastor of Good Shepherd Lu theran Church after 46 years of ministry there. A number of festivities followed his farewell sermon June 10, including a reception at the Inglewood church for Dierker and his wife, Wilma, and a banquet at the Los Angeles Air Force Station Officers Club in El Segundo. Dierker was ordained in the Lutheran ministry on March 21, 1943, in a dance studio that also served as a church meeting hall in Leimert Park near Inglewood. In addition to his parish work, Dierker serves as chairman of the board of regents of Christ College Irvine.

Lee Ann Duskin was awarded a scholarship for $3,500 during a reception held recently by the faculty and trustees of Marymount College. Duskin will be a sophomore at the college in the fall.

Torrance resident Joyce Barrington was cited recently for her 35 years as a volunteer at Torrance Memorial Medical Center. Barrington trains all of the medical center’s emergency department volunteers. The mother of five children, she started out volunteering one day a week and over the years has worked in the areas of information desk, transportation, maternity teas and nursing floors. She is currently in the emergency room.
