Mosley, 2 Other U.S. Boxers Beat Soviets

Victories by Shane Mosley of Pomona and two other U.S. boxers helped the North American team dominate U.S. Olympic Cup boxing competition Saturday at Salt Lake City.

Eric Griffin and Raul Marquez, both of Houston, and Mosley all won decisions over Soviet fighters.

Griffin beat Evgeni Novosleov in the 106-pound division, Mosley defeated Leonid Bronnikov in a 132-pound bout and Marquez outpointed Andrei Tracenko in a battle of 147-pounders.

The North American squad, which also includes boxers from Cuba and Canada, won five of seven bouts against a European team.

North America’s other two victories were by Cubans--Enrique Carrion at 126 pounds and Felix Savon in the heavyweight match.

The U.S. Olympic Cup, a two-day competition between athletes from North America and Europe, concludes today. Boxing is one of five sports.
