In the latest change among top executives at Apple Computer Inc., William B. Coldrick resigned as senior vice president-sales for Apple USA and will be a part-time adviser to the unit’s president.

Coldrick, 47, will work on strategic issues and special projects. He said he left his full-time post to spend more time with his family.

Michael L. Dionne, 41, will succeed Coldrick in the top U.S. sales post. Dionne was vice president of Southwestern operations for Apple USA.

A year ago, Apple reportedly gave Coldrick a compensation package worth $2.1 million a year when he was considering going to a competitor.

Apple is still looking for a president for Apple USA, five months after Michael Spindler, Apple’s chief operating officer, became acting president of the unit upon the resignation of Allan Z. Loren. Coldrick said Apple USA would have a new president soon.

Also earlier this year, Apple’s new-products developer, Jean-Louis Gassee, left the company.
