WESTMINSTER : Storage Burglary Suspect Captured

It was the car parked on the shoulder of the Garden Grove Freeway that first caught Officer Chris Taylor’s eye as he headed for home just after 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

The car, a 1965 AMC Rambler, just happened to be stopped behind Public Self Storage, a Westminster storage firm on Garden Grove Boulevard that had been burglarized several times in the last few months, Police Lt. Andrew Hall said.

Just as the off-duty officer was wondering what to do next about the suspicious car, a man crested the embankment lugging an electric piano stand. The startled man dropped it and fled at the sight of the officer, leaving behind a car full of stereos, speakers, videotape recorders, jewelry and even an automatic golfing machine.

A chase ensued, Hall said. Taylor quickly captured the suspect, who was identified as Jeffrey Allen Wright, 25, of Westminster. A remote-control unit found in Wright’s pocket matched a Zenith videotape player found in the car, Hall said.

Wright, who was being held Sunday at Orange County Jail, is suspected of stealing about $1,700 worth of electronic equipment and household items from 20 or so storage units early Sunday, police said.
