A robber at the downtown Imperial Bank escaped with $808 Monday morning, police said.

Shortly after 11 a.m., the man handed a bank teller a note demanding money, police spokesman Bill Robinson said. The teller handed the robber the money, along with an explosive dye pack designed to explode and spew red ink. The robber took the money but handed the dye pack back to the teller, Robinson said.

The robber was described as a white male, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, 35 years old, weighing 135 to 150 pounds, he said. The man was wearing a white painter’s cap, a long-sleeve blue, button-down shirt and blue jeans. He was scruffy in appearance and was wearing sunglasses.

The bank, in the 700 block of B Street, closed for about an hour, Robinson said. Police questioned witnesses and are still investigating.
