GOLF STATE AMATEUR TOURNAMENT : Brad Hansen’s 72 Leads First Day of Qualifying
Brad Hansen, who lives on the Monterey Peninsula, equaled par Monday to grab the lead in the medalist race during the first day of qualifying for match play in the 79th annual California Golf Assn. State Amateur Championship.
Hansen overcame a double-bogey five on the famed 16th at Cypress Point Club to post his 37-35--72. His round included five birdies, one on the 18th, and three bogeys.
Hansen, 29, moved to Monterey two years ago. He played collegiate golf at the University of Utah and was the 1986 Utah State Amateur champion. His score was one shot better than the 73s registered by five players.
Today’s second round of qualifying will be played at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club’s Shore Course. Only the low 32 survive from the original field of 102.
Match play begins Wednesday at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
