A man authorities said was distraught over breaking up with his girlfriend has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly wounded two Inglewood police officers during a shoot-out Tuesday.

Keith Lampkin, 30, of Los Angeles was also wounded in the incident. He was in serious condition Wednesday at Martin Luther King Jr.-Drew Medical Center in Willowbrook after suffering several bullet wounds, police said.

Four Inglewood police officers, whose names were withheld, responded to a report of a man with a gun in the 300 block of West Regent Street about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday. According to police, Lampkin fired on the officers, striking one in both feet and grazing the other in the head.

All four officers returned fire, using service revolvers and a shotgun, and struck Lampkin numerous times, police said.

Police said that, according to their investigation, Lampkin was distraught over a recent breakup with his girlfriend and intended to kill the woman and himself. When police arrived, Lampkin allegedly fired into the West Regent Street residence where his girlfriend was staying and then fired on the officers.

A police spokesman said it was unclear whether anyone was in the residence when the shooting occurred.

Lampkin faces seven felony charges, including two for attempted murder and two for assault with a deadly weapon, police said.

As with all officer-involved shootings, the district attorney’s office will investigate, police said.
