An 11-year-old boy who was walking to a grocery store to buy water was killed after he was struck by a car as he attempted to cross a busy street in La Habra, police said.

Anthony William Sheehan, of La Habra, was pronounced dead at the Friendly Hills Medical Center at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday night.

About an hour earlier, Sheehan was struck by a 1986 Olds Delta as he attempted to cross Whittier Boulevard at Idaho Street, La Habra police spokeswoman Cindy Knapp said.

Knapp said the boy apparently attempted to cross the street against a red “don’t walk signal,” adding that the driver, identified as Brian Wayne MacDonald, 23, of Whitier, did not see the pedestrian.

“Our inital investigation shows that he (Sheehan) hit the car before the car hit him,” Knapp said.

Knapp said the driver was not cited and an investigation is under way.
