A California sailor who suffered critical burns and internal injuries after a June 20 explosion aboard the U.S. aircraft carrier Midway has died at Brooke Army Medical Center, officials said today.

Robert Shane Kilgore, 22, of Simi Valley had been in the critical care burn unit since he was brought into the San Antonio medical center last week, and he died late Wednesday, said spokesman Ray Dery.

The cause of the blast, which killed three crewmen on the spot and injured 15 others, is still under investigation, a Navy spokesman said.

Explosions rocked the aircraft carrier and fire broke out about 30 minutes after smoke was detected during flight operations off the coast of Japan. The Midway is the Navy’s oldest carrier in active service.
