Warning to Be Posted Near Storm Drain

Share

Signs will be posted warning beach-goers not to swim within 100 yards of where the Pico-Kenter storm drain enters Santa Monica Bay as a result of a study that found evidence of human viruses from fecal contamination.

High bacteria levels have been found there in the past, but the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Project study is the first to detect viruses responsible for swimming-associated illnesses.

The viruses were found in samples taken on 11 of 15 days last August and September where the Pico-Kenter drain discharges into the bay, at the foot of Pico Boulevard in Santa Monica.
