I have to respond to Richard Blue’s letter from last Saturday regarding Nolan Ryan.
Mr. Blue’s letter states that Ryan should never make the Hall of Fame because of the number of walks he has issued. Since Mr. Blue thinks a poor showing in one category is reason for exclusion, then I’m sure that he will agree with the following:
1. Get rid of Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle because they are among the all-time leaders in striking out. Mike Schmidt fanned a lot, too.
2. Get rid of Ted Williams and Stan Musial. They couldn’t steal bases.
3. Rod Carew and Roberto Clemente? No way. Not enough homers.
By the way: Are Buzzie Bavasi and Richard Blue related?
